Herbalife Nutrition At Work Survey Reveals Filipino Millennials Desire Healthy, Active Workplace Environment

While the survey conducted reveals that more Filipino millennials are engaging in regular physical activities outside work, they find it difficult to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle in the modern workplace.

PHILIPPINES, October 27, 2016 – Herbalife Nutrition, a global nutrition company, has released the findings from its Asia Pacific Millennials At Work Survey1, which revealed that Filipino millennials are adapting a healthy, active lifestyle, however, most believe their current workplace environment prevents them from doing so.

Millennials, or people born in between 1980 and 2000, are opting for a workplace that will encourage them to stay active, if only this will be embedded in every company culture.  About 83 percent or eight (8) in 10 millennials have agreed that they would like their company workplace to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle.

With the millennial generation expected to make up 50 percent of the global workforce by 2020, ensuring the wellbeing of millennials will be important to improving workplace productivity. “There are about 35 million millennials now in the Philippines, which is about one-third of the country’s entire population. Five years from now, millennials will be dominating the labor force. While most millennials want to lead healthy lives, they face real obstacles at work in doing so,”
said Rosalio Valenzuela, Herbalife Philippines General Manager. “At Herbalife Nutrition, we provide our employees with nutrition products at work, subsidize gym memberships, hold regular wellness programs related to nutrition and well-being, and encourage participation in outdoor activities and sports competitions.”

Additionally, the survey findings revealed the following:

·         Seven (7) out of 10 millennials strive to live healthy, active lives
·         However, the majority of millennials find it challenging to maintain an active lifestyle at work – eight (8) out of 10 millennials spend 6 to 13 hours at their work desk each day, and 64% of millennials get less than 30 minutes of physical activity - including standing, stretching and walking at work on an average work day.
·         Additionally, 64% of millennials cited the “lack of time” as the key obstacle to engaging in physical activity at work.

To provide tips on how millennials and their employers can integrate positive nutrition and life style habits at their workplaces, Herbalife Nutrition has organized a sixth Asia Pacific Wellness Tour, which builds upon the successes of the past five tours that welcomed over 100, 000  participants. Five experts from the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board (NAB) are scheduled to tour 21 Asian cities from October 7 to 30, to hold a series of talks, workshops and medical symposia across the region.

“Through these efforts, we hope to equip organizations and employees with the right tools to collectively build a healthier work environment across Asia Pacific,” said Valenzuela.

Julian Alvarez Garcia, M.D., Ph.D., a member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board, will be visiting Manila for the Asia Pacific Wellness Tour this October. Julian Alvarez Garcia, M.D., Ph.D. will also be sharing expert advice on how millennials can adopt simple positive nutrition and lifestyle habits at work to improve their overall well-being in the long run.

Some of the tips to help foster a healthier millennial workforce include:

·         Nutrition

o   Dedicate a healthy eating day each week and get colleagues involved in making healthy choices for lunch on this day.
o   Boost water intake to help the body digest food, rid the body of toxins, and help deliver nutrients to the cells. Drink at least eight (8) glasses or two (2) liters of water a day.
o   Have a protein shake combined with non-fat milk and healthy fruit for breakfast. With 20-30 grams of protein and low-fat contents, it can provide the body with all the nutrition it needs to power through the day.

·         Active Living

o   Create a playlist that incorporates upbeat music and play with hourly intervals.
o   Use Running Apps to keep energized and on-pace during regular runs.
o   Set a goal to join running competitions to motivate self to sustain an active lifestyle.

1Herbalife’s Millennials At Work Survey was conducted in 2016, with 5,500 respondents aged 18 and above, from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Cohen Meals on Wheels, The Convenient Way To Eat Healthy

Are you having a hard time keeping up with your diet plan? Have your food delivered to your doorstep! It’s convenient, a timesaver and most importantly, effective.

A study published in the medical journal, Obesity Research, suggested that food provision is an effective strategy to weight-loss patients: “Better results might be achieved if more direct approaches were taken to make environmental changes by providing food to participants.”

In the Philippines, one popular food delivery service is the Cohen Meals on Wheels, which is exclusively offered to the followers of the Cohen’s Lifestyle Program, a personalized and rapid weight-loss program through nutrition. The Cohen Meals on Wheels delivers customized food to clients following the guidelines of the Cohen program.

We aim to provide a solution to clients who find it a challenge to prepare their own meals daily,” says Chef Pixie Sevilla. A pastry chef, consultant, food stylist, and food writer, Chef Pixie went through the Cohen program herself before leading the team of chefs who prepare the Cohen Meals on Wheels dishes based on a weekly menu.

“The temptation of clients to cheat mostly comes from the lack of time to prepare their meals, or if they do have time, they tend to prepare the same meals over and over again. With Cohen Meals on Wheels, we make sure that we prepare their meals accurately and we plan the menu in such a way that they will look forward to it every day and will enjoy eating them as well,” she elaborates.

Pajeon
A growing number of clients have found Cohen Meals on Wheels to be an answer to their needs, including Dr. Ryan Capitulo, an obstetrician-gynecologist and assistant professor. Dr. Capitulo weighed more than 300 lbs. and suffered from hypertension when he enrolled in the Cohen program.

Beef Stroganoff

Like most clients, he did not have a knack for cooking so he ordered food from Cohen Meals on Wheels to follow his personalized meal plan. “I don’t know how to cook and I don’t have the time to prepare my own meals. Cohen Meals on Wheels has definitely helped me follow my meal plans and lose weight.”

Cauliflower Arancini

Aside from convenience, Dr. Capitulo also said that buying food from Cohen Meals on Wheels was cheaper compared to his usual food expenses. “Oftentimes, I was spending 3,000-5,000 pesos just for food before I started Cohen. What’s more, the dishes taste excellent, considering the guidelines of the Cohen program.”

Happy and satisfied with the Cohen Meals on Wheels service, Dr. Capitulo was not deprived of delicious food while following his personalized Cohen meal plan. Most importantly, his weight has also dropped. He lost 88 pounds in 4.5 months.

As for Chef Pixie and the people behind Cohen Meals on Wheels, they are continuously looking for new recipes to add in the menus. They are also considering the possibility of a larger delivery scope. “There are some inquiries that we can’t cater to yet because of the area they are in, especially in the major cities outside Metro Manila.”

MediCard Offers Advanced Food Intolerance Testing

Do you sometimes feel bloated or suffer headaches after eating certain food items? Your body may be “secretly” reacting to the food you have just eaten. It is also possible that some of the recurring health issues you have been experiencing are caused by certain food that your body cannot tolerate.

According to Dr. Nicky Montoya, president of MediCard Philippines, a leading health maintenance organization, “food intolerance, unlike food allergy, manifests symptoms gradually, usually 72 hours to a few days after eating the offending food. It may cause different inflammatory symptoms which may affect different organs of the body and manifests as weight gain, bloating, migraine, body aches and pains including joint pains, PMS, depression etc. These can also become worse over time and may lead to more serious health problems, such as heart disease, cancer and the likes, if ignored.” Due to food intolerance’ delayed onset to manifest in the body, it is difficult to trace the root cause which is often just the food you are intolerant to.

MediCard has recently introduced FoodPrint, the most advanced and comprehensive food intolerance testing, to its members. This food intolerance test from the UK helps identify the food groups that trigger health problems. It involves exposing your body to 220 food items then taking a pin-prick sample of your blood for analysis. The test is a preventive measure and lifestyle modification tool. Knowing what food your body cannot tolerate can help you get rid of the symptoms and prevents the development of other diseases, like cancer and diabetes.

Food intolerance is a detrimental reaction of the body after ingesting certain food and beverages, which usually triggers a mild inflammatory reaction of the gut and digestive problems, like diarrhea and constipation. Its other symptoms include migraines, moodiness, and tiredness at certain times of the day, and difficulty losing weight.

MediCard offers a discounted rate for the Food Intolerance Test—PHP 11,400 for MediCard members and PHP 12,000 for non-members until July 31, 2016 only. After the test, you will be given a personalized food report and dietary guidebook.

The innovative service is offered at the MediCard Lifestyle Center, a first-of-its-kind wellness center in Makati, and at the MediCard clinics in Centris, EDSA and Alabang. To avail of the service, call the MediCard Lifestyle Center at (02) 894-5720 or 878-5101, MediCard Centris, EDSA at (02) 920-5164 or 775-4629, and MediCard Alabang at (02) 850-3209 or 807-9219.

Healthway Medical—the most trusted and preferred mall-based clinics in the Philippines—recently capped off its third annual Dance for Health competition at the Alabang Town Center. For the second time in row, Indak [24]7 Dance Force won the yearly competition.

*Opening the Dance for Health 3 competition with VP of Sales and Marketing, Carmie De Leon, and ATC clinic manager, Dr. Vina Daguio, together with the marketing team.

Indak [24]7 Dance Force—the official dance troupe of [24]7 Customer Philippines, Inc.—claimed their second championship title after besting seven other teams. The group took home PhP 75,000.00 and premium merchandise from Salem Beds.

Dance for Health is the annual dance battle launched by Healthway Medical to encourage corporations to join its advocacy in promoting a healthy lifestyle among Filipino employees.

According to Carmie De Leon, vice president for sales and marketing of Healthway Medical, employers need to put a premium on their employees’ health for them to become more productive at work and at home.

“Being healthy brings a lot of advantages not only to individuals but also to the whole workforce,” De Leon said. “That’s why when we launched the Dance for Health, we had corporations in mind—we want employers to put value on the health benefits of exercising and how this activity can improve their employees’ productivity.” De Leon said that the Dance For Health competition was first launched to celebrate the company’s anniversary. Now, “we decided to make it a full-blown advocacy for Healthway to easily reach out to corporations and encourage them to move to a healthier lifestyle.”

Eight different teams from some of the country’s biggest corporations danced their way to win this year’s Dance for Health championship crown. The judges were Elijah Africa, a freelance yoga instructor in major hotels such as DusitThani Manila and Makati Shangri-La Hotel; Jill Ngo, one of the country’s top belly dancers; and Mark Angeles, a licensed Zumba fitness instructor in the Philippines.

“Pinaghandaan talaga naming ito. Nagsacrifice talaga kami para makuha yung title. Nagpay-off naman siya. Kaya I’m very happy with Healthway kasi dinaos nila ulit ito. Mas naging fierce lang yung competition kaya tinaasan din naming yung level of confidence at effort namin kasi alam namin na competitive din yung ibang teams na sumali,” Cleofe said.

He continued, “Kaya salamat talaga sa Healthway sa pag-initiate ng ganitong event. Sana ipagpatuloy niyo pa ito para mas marami kayong mapasaya at matulungan. Ang ganda kasi eh, it’s for a good cause: to promote healthy living talaga lalo na sa mga tulad naming magdamag nasa office. Sa lahat ng nagtiwala samin, maraming salamat and see you again next year.”

The Dance for Health 3 is part of Healthway Medical’s Sleep, Eat Right, Exercise and De-stress (S.E.E.D.) campaign, which aims to raise the bar in promoting a healthy lifestyle among Filipinos.

De Leon concluded, “Employers are expected to be more proactive in helping their employees maintain a holistic well-being because this makes them more productive. More importantly, keeping your employees healthy also makes them happier, and happy people are always passionate about their jobs and life, in general. #WilkinsCyrcleOfTrust Shares 10 Safety Hacks for Moms

A few weeks ago, I attended the Wilkins Safety Hacks for Moms, as  part of Mom’s Circle of Trust, they also invited moms from the media to join an intimate but interactive brunch where they learned do-it-yourself safety hacks from other trusted expert moms using materials that are easily accessible from their own homes.

Keeping kids away from harm at all times can be a challenge.  Whatever kids are doing, it is inevitable for them to fall down or bump into things. As much as it pains mothers to admit, that is a great part of their learning process. But it’s also good to know that there are ways to keep children safe, whatever they do.

The event was hosted by the pretty and fun  Delamar Arias, and she shared to us some do-it yourself  hacks for moms so we can create a safe and secure home for our family, specially the kids.

From the tips below you will learn that a quick visit to a hardware store or the nearest supermarket can save moms from a nerve-wracking trip to the hospital. Here are just some of the tips shared with the moms during the Wilkins event that you yourself can try at home:

1.      Scout the Territory. The first step is to take a child’s eye view of your home. Get down on your knees to see for yourself what’s within reach, what looks tempting, and what could be dangerous for your kids.

2.      Cushion Sharp Edges and Soften Up Corners. Invest on furniture edge guards and corner protectors; foam pipe insulations for instance are easily available at hardware stores. When your child starts running around the house, you’ll be thankful you brought that extra protection.

3.      Keep Window Cords Up High. Loop and tie window cords to keep them out of reach of children, but not too high that you can’t lower the shade all the way down.

4.      Duct Tape on Power Outlets. Cover reachable openings with duct tape or band aid to avoid the risk of electrocution.

5.   Keep Doors Unlocked. Prevent kids from locking themselves in the room by covering the latch. A securely taped cardboard would suffice for this.

6.   Temporary Tattoo. When leaving the house, write down your phone number on your kids’ arms so that people could easily reach you if your little ones get lost.

7.      Know your First Aid. Always keep a first aid kit handy, whether you are at home or traveling with your kids. Know the alternatives too. Here are some: for minor burns, vinegar can ease the pain and prevent blisters; paste made out of baking soda and water can maker splinter removals less painful; and coconut oil can prevent infection in small cuts and can sooth sunburn.

8.   Monitor What They Eat. Always prepare clean, fresh and healthy food that is consistent with your child’s balanced diet. Make sure all ingredients and utensils used are properly cleaned as well. Kids might be hesitant to eat vegetables and fruits, but with proper presentation – lots of colors and shapes – you can be sure that your kids will finish their food.

9.   Drink Only Safe and Clean Water. Moms’ most trusted and pediatricians’ prescribed brand is Wilkins Distilled Water. It follows an international quality control system and uses only state-of-the-art equipment in packing and sealing its products to ensure clean and safe quality water.

10. Emergency Master File for Your Circle of Trust. We all have our most trusted support group, people we know we can count on when it comes to taking care of our kids. This includes grandparents, siblings, the best friend, yaya, pediatricians, OB/GYNS, teachers, among others. Keep their contact details and other vital information in one master file in order to reach them quickly in case of emergency.

In line with its commitment to advancing health care in the country through its world class service and network of specialized experts, The Medical City (TMC) launched Be Healthy Always, a movement that advocates the power of prevention and encourages Filipinos to take charge of their health and wellbeing by ensuring regular check-ups.

TMC’s experts stressed that the ideal prevention approach not only includes healthy lifestyle choices, but also promotes the early and proactive detection, diagnosis and appropriate management of conditions and illnesses, throughout one’s entire lifecycle. Discussions with the public also covered topics such as the best defense against heart diseases, aging well, customized care for diabetics, and the basic to-do's for expecting mothers.

“At TMC, we are committed to empowering families to making healthier choices by expanding our services to ensure that quality healthcare is accessible to all,” says Dr. Bengzon.  “Through the Be Healthy Always Movement, we want to inspire and push every Filipino to start taking an active role in caring for their health, to see families live life to its fullest and as burden-free as possible.”
